Liminal Village - Temple Gardens

Gateways: Edges and the passages between them
Zen xeriscape permaculture demonstration gardens

The Temple Gardens theme this year is 'Gateways', liminal passages between one zone and another. The gateways represent edges and highlight their importance in creating microclimates and as places of biodiversity from the permaculture perspective

The interior of Portugal is hot and dry so the focus will be on water conservation and drought-resistant plants. The permaculture plants we are using will play one or more of the following functions:

food
medicine
attract beneficial insects (like pollinators)
repel pests
bioaccumulator (brings nutrient from deep in the ground)
spike root plants (helps break up the soil)
nitrogen fixers
bioremediator (cleans soil, water or air)

There is a focus on native plants of Portugal though any permaculture plants suitable for this climate will be used. Plants considered sacred or with a long history of use are also a feature part of this years gardens.

Follow the liminal pathways through a series of gates and gardens created as an interactive demonstration site for exploring permaculture, a practice of perspectives and toolkit of techniques for co-creating a more sustainable world. Guided by a map and sign series, the Temple Gardens are a meditation on how we can improve our health and the health of our planet. Bridging nature and culture, the gardens are a gateway into a greener future.
