Survival Guide

Cool Boom

We are pleased to know that you are coming to Boom. The beautiful inland landscape of Portugal awaits you for a celebration around the lake of Idanha-a-Nova.
Here are some handy tips that help you have an even better experience!

Three Ideas For a Nice Boom

1. Keep trace of your garbage. Be responsible, preserve the leave no trace attitude!
2. Keep an open mind for the cultural diversity of people and arts while at Boom.
3. Respect Nature! Never pollute the lake!

Be Careful With The Powerful Sun!

Being in the sunlight, near the lake, watching the mountains around us. We all love it! Get a nice sun tan and a healthier mood after a full day of sun exposure in Portugal. This holiday mood is also one of the Boom experiences.
However August’s sun is dangerous, mainly for those with more sensitive skins. Both the sun and the dry air can dehydrate your body.
Drink loads of water and use sun protector.

Drink Up

While at Boom, always drink large quantities of fluids. The climate in Idanha-a-Nova region is quite hot and dry (temperatures can go above 35º Celsius and average humidity 20%), so you should drink water at regular intervals (every 15 minutes or so) during the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.

What to do if the heat hits you strong:

1. Sit or lie down under the shade.
2. Drink water or sports drinks.
3. If persistent, gently apply cloths or water to the skin. Lay a cool, moistened cloth (for instance a safi) over the forehead or back of the neck and replace often.
4. Have a swim in the lake!
5. Seek medical help in Boom hospital if you suspect dehydration.

Shade

We all need to protect ourselves from the hot Southern European sun.
In 2008, Boom is expanding its shadow-covered area, however we advise all the participants to bring their own shades, particularly for the tents. Be creative and make your camping site an art-oriented area. Or go to the Info Stand to purchase camping kits and shadows.

Tents

Please do not leave your tent behind at the end of Boom. They will become one extra piece of litter and can not be recycled.

Fire = Forbidden!

Due to the extreme dry conditions and high fire risk it is totally forbidden to make fire at Boom. All sources of fire are forbidden (including cooking gear). A communal kitchen for the appetite masters, will be available at the main camping area.

Cigarette butts

Cigarette butts are the one of the most polluting items on the planet. Help protect the environment by disposing of cigarettes properly. Become aware of your littering patterns! And tune them up for minimum impact…
At the Boom gates you will receive a pocket ashtray. Be sure you have it all the time so that you can avoid polluting the nature and the lake. When the ashtray is full, simply dump its contents into the garbage containers.
Worldwide, smokers toss at least 4.5 trillion cigarette butts each year, garbage that causes significant environmental harm. A cigarette butt takes 15 years to break down in nature.

Lock Ups

Leaving valuables in your tent can be risky so make use of the lock ups situated in the Info Stand.

Lost Property

If you are missing or have lost some kind of goodies please enquire at the Info Stand. After the Boom please call the Boom HQ on +351 219 382 219. Or email on info@boomfestival.org.

Info Stand

The Info Stand is the place to go for advice and get information, lost property, message board, booking trips to Idanha-a-Nova, getting the Daily Dragon newspaper and be updated with the latest Boom info.

Recycling

In order to reduce the amount of waste produced on site, we provide separate recycling bins for paper, metal, plastic and glass.

Recycling - Can Usage

After using cans please put them in the recycle containers. Do not throw it away in the venue or in the lake.

Recycling – Plastic, Metal, Paper

Put all plastic bottles, metals and papers in the recycling containers.

Eco Team

Boom hosts its own team of environmentalists. Their action ranges from keeping the venue always clean to generating ecological consciousness. Please be cooperative with them. They will be identified so that you can approach and be a part of the common task of protecting nature.

Composting toilets

Toilets at Boom are dry and compostable. Your human “donation” falls into composting containers where they undergo a biological process. This composting process solves what would be a problem for the environment, transforming your “donation” into earth substrate. Please follow carefully the instructions of their use and never throw chemicals or garbage inside.

Biological treatment of waste waters

The showers will have a special treatment so that we do not harm mother nature. All the used water of the showers and sinks, will pass through a series of wet garden beds and organic filters. Here it is allowed to evaporate while the roots of aquatic plants clean the water. Hence closing the cycle. Please use as less water as you can and use only biodegradable soaps that are provided at the shower cubicles.

Minimise packaging

Before leaving home consider carefully what you will bring to Boom. Please bring less packaging on site. Avoid bringing plastics, glass, metals and other environmental harmful materials. Let’s reduce garbage consumption!
