It’s a ritualistic behaviour. Each time anyone of us goes to a festival, there is thorough planning involved and info requests go out to friends and websites.
Here are some tips for Boom 2010. Don’t forget: bring huge amounts of joy!

FIVE IDEAS FOR A NICE BOOM

    1. The Middle Way: Do not overdo anything and never exceed your limits. Both your body and mind are precious.
    2. Keep Track of your garbage. Adopt a Leave No Trace attitude!
    3. Keep an Open Mind for the cultural diversity of people and arts while at Boom.
    4. Respect the Nature. Never pollute the lake! All life is precious.
    5. Be a Participant: Set your intentions every day and find the best motivation and happiness to spread at Boom. YOU are Boom!

ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIORS

Cigarette Butts

Cigarette butts are the most polluting item on the planet. Help protect the environment by disposing of cigarettes properly and becoming aware of the littering problem. At the gates Boom Festival will provide pocket ashtrays. Be sure you carry yours at all times so that you do not pollute nature and the lake. When the ashtrays are full empty them into the garbage containers. Come on, its easy!
Worldwide, smokers toss at least 4.5 trillion cigarette butts each year and this litter causes significant environmental harm.
A cigarette butt takes 15 years to break down in the nature.

Recycling

In order to reduce the amount of waste produced on site, we provide separate recycling bins for paper, metal, plastic and glass.

Recycling – Can Usage

After using cans please put them in the recycling containers. Do not throw them away in the venue or in the lake.

Recycling – Plastic, Metal, Paper

Put all plastic bottles, metals and papers in the recycling containers.

Eco Team

Boom has a local team of environmentalists to clean up the venue all the time. Please be cooperative with them. They will be identified so that you too can help them and be part of the common task of not harming nature and the lake.

Composting Toilets

Toilets at Boom will be compostable. The waste falls into composting containers where a biological process is the solution for what would otherwise be a problem for the environment. Please follow instructions and never throw chemicals inside. We trust you to be sensible.

Biological Treatment of Waste Waters

The showers will have a special treatment so that we don’t harm nature. After use in the showers and sinks, the water passes through a series of wet garden beds where it is allowed to evaporate whilst the roots of aquatic plants clean it.  Please use as least water as possible in the showers and please use the organic shampoos we give for free to the people.

HEALTHY BOOM

Eat and Sleep

Festivals are about partying but there is no party without food and a nice rest. Rest at least 6 hours per day and have two meals per day. Your body and mind need energy and nutrition to well function. Accordingly you can only get the most out of Boom with good rest.

Beware With What You Consume

Unfortunately overconsumption is a practice in modern world. Human beings are adopting this model of consumption to the limit, ironically the same model that is taking the Sacred Earth into destruction.

We advise: Never consume unknown substances, always test what you take at the official stands run by legal organizations such as Check In or Energy Control. Drugs are illegal at Boom Festival – as they are in the rest of Portugal. Taking drugs can be dangerous, and can cause unpredictable behaviour which may ruin the festival experience.

Respect your body and respect your mind. Life is precious.

Drink Up

If you’re enjoying Boom, you should drink fluids all the time. The weather in the Idanha-a-Nova region is really hot and dry (temperatures can go above 35º Celsius), so you should drink water at regular intervals (every 20 minutes or so) during the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Beware of the Sun!

We all love it. Being in the sunlight, near the lake, watching the mountains around us. Some days after sun exposure in Portugal we all get nice tanned colours and a healthier mood. This holiday mood is also one of the Boom experiences.

However too much sun can be quite dangerous, mainly for those with fairer skin. Both the sun and the dryness of the air can dehydrate your body. Drink liquids and apply sun screen on your skin.

What to do if the heat hits you strong:

1. Sit or lie down in the shade.
2. Drink water or sports drinks.
3. If persistent, gently apply cloths or water to the skin. Lay a cool, moistened cloth (for instance a safi) over the forehead or back of the neck and replace often.
4. Have a swim in the lake!
5. Seek medical help at the Boom hospital if you suspect dehydration.

PRACTICAL INFO

Minimize Packaging

Please bring less packaging onto the site. Please avoid bringing plastic, glass, metals and other environmentally harmful materials.

Don’t Forget Your Festival Wristband

Please ensure that your wristband is correctly fastened so that it can’t be removed without being cut.

Shade

We all need to protect ourselves from the hot Southern European sun.
In 2010 Boom is expanding its shade-covered area, however we advise all participants to bring their own shades, particularly for the tents. Be creative and make your camping site an art-oriented area. Or go to the Info Stand to purchase camping kits and shades.

Tents

Please don’t leave your tent behind at the end of Boom. They will become one extra piece of litter and can’t be recycled.

Fire

Due to the extreme dry conditions and potential fire risks it is totally forbidden to make fire at Boom. We also remind you of the dangers of using portable gas devices due to the high temperatures.

Lock Ups

Leaving valuables in your tent can be risky so make use of the lock ups situated at the Info Stand.

Lost Property

If you are missing something and lost some kind of goodies please go to the Info Stand. After the Boom Festival please contact the Boom HQ: info@boomfestival.org.

Info Stand

The Info Stand is the place to go for advice and information, lost property, message board, booking trips to Idanha-a-Nova, and to be updated with the latest Boom info.
