Creating safe spaces for difficult psychedelic experiences is the main aim of Kosmicare Project.

Portuguese law allows harm reduction practices. Since substances were decriminalized in 2001 in Portugal organizations are able to implement harm reduction methods for the well being of all participants in events. Boom works closely with Portuguese governmental institution IDT to provide the best caretaking for the people in need.

With the idea that a shared community response-ability seeks to look out and take care of each member, Boom has created a service that provides a safe space for those having difficulty processing an experience whilst under the influence of psychoactive substances or are emotionally imbalanced.

At Boom Festival, a harm reduction initiative within a safe environment benefits people who want to combine being in touch with psychedelics and the intense experience of communal living.

Boom started hosting this initiative in 2002 with the support of MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies). In 2008 the project was re-designed, building on lessons learnt, so that it could be shared around the globe.
In 2010 the KosmiCare framework will be put in place, coordinated by the psychologists, therapists, psychiatrists, paramedics and doctors.

Parallel to harm reduction services, Boom teams up with institutions that are specialized in testing and informing about mind-altering substances. Some of these are MAPS, Energy Control, Check In, Geração + and Erowid which had a knowledgeable team of facilitators who assisted people in psychedelic crisis, were part of a care-model of action based on harm-reduction and health promotion, encouraging self-expression with proper grounding.

Overall, this particular structure is designed to be a leading project in the psychoactive field at festivals. In the long run, the aim is to be able to replicate this framework in more places, training volunteers and forming responsible facilitators across the world.

We are also working in investigation in the world of academic science.

If you wish to form a network with the volunteers and other facilitators, please contact us: kosmicare@boomfestival.org.

Kosmicare Project is held according to the Portuguese Law of harm reduction practices and under the monitoring of a Portuguese Governmental Institution – IDT (Instituto da Droga e Toxicodependência).
