A branch of the bure-antinuclear committees from the french eco-anarchist "ZAD". Anarchist/ecologist activists from Europe.

The ZAD - to the developers it is the Zone d’Aménagement Différé’, the differed development zone and for us it’s a Zone À Défendre: a zone to be defended. Either way, it’s a part of the countryside close to Nantes in France, which according to the decision-makers should make way for an international airport.

Their construction project "Grand Ouest" is an economic platform of international importance stretching from Nantes to Saint-Nazaire, which will form a singular, huge metropolis. Fulfilling this project means taking over the sky, the sea and the land in replacing the current airport in Nantes with a new one at Notre-Dame-des-Landes, but also enlarging the port at Saint-Nazaire and constructing new roads and highways…

Their goals, in coming to live here on the proposed site of the airport, are many: to live on a protest site, where we can be close to those who’ve been opposing the project for 40 years and to have the power to act when construction happens; to make use of abandoned spaces to learn to live together, to cultivate the land and to be more autonomous from the capitalist system.

PRESENTATION STOP BURE ! Resistance, Sabotage and Listening - How to fight against the nuclear power and its waste for eternity ?

Since twenty years the antinuclear struggle has been very weak in France : it is hard to fight against an order providing 80% of the energy and a strategic geopolitical fonction to your own country. Nuclear industry is not only a source of energy but mainly a big project of organisation and control of the globalized society. Difficult to criticize something we are all so intimately dependent of.

Two years ago, a breach was open into the nuclear order in Bure, a little village in the east of France where the state wants to build a huge nuclear bin to bury high level nuclear waste for eternity : 300 people - inspired by the ZAD (Zone à Défendre) movement against the international airport in Nantes - broke the wall the state was building to protect the forest where the project should be implemented. Since then  they occupied the forest and did give a new breathe to the antinuclear struggle in France.

But the forest was expulsed by the police in February and we are looking for new inspirations to bring this struggle further. We want to talk about the importance of developing tools to make people aware of the reality of the permanent risk coming from the nuclearisation of the planet, often forgotten in the middle of the chaos of globalization. As antinuclear activists, we came first to share with you our emotions, feelings and thougts about what we are going through.
