João Morais, is the Gajo ('Gajo' means 'guy' in Portuguese). This portuguese “dude” is in love with the deepest traditional musical culture of his country and because of this passion he discovered one of the oldest portuguese instruments - the Viola Campaniça - a traditional root instrument with centuries of cultural history.
Also known as “Viola Alentejana”, the Viola Campaniça was the musical instrument used to accompany the “ cante alentejano”, the famous songs that today are part of the UNESCO´s heritage. It is the largest member of the Portuguese violas family and has 5 orders of strings traditionally played by fingering only with the thumb.
Mixing this traditional sound with modern musical influences João created something unique that can sound like fado, but is not fado, can sound like traditional music, but is not traditional music. A psychedelic hybrid of all this and a lot more!
