Boom Festival is celebrating 30 years on planet Earth in 2027 – but how did it all begin? Come with us on a journey through time, space and Portugal to discover the depths of our psychedelic roots, and relive pivotal moments in Boom’s history along the way.

These 15 microfilms, soundtracked by an emblematic collection of music, explore the festival’s expansive odyssey across eras and oceans in search of a transformative new psychedelic experience. Featuring decades of vibrant archival footage, the series captures Boom’s cultural impact and the global community that has grown around the festival, offering a unique window into its past, present and future.

For our first microfilm, launched today, we’re travelling back to where it all began – a magical forest in Setúbal. It’s 14 August 1997, and the psytrance scene has been booming since the early ‘90s, uniting people across the world. But the arrival of Boom really puts Portugal’s psy scene on the map.
