Named after the Sanskrit word for compassion, the Boom Karuna Project was conceived in 2014 as a way to redistribute part of the profits from the Boom Festival in support of humanitarian, environmental and social causes, both locally and internationally, including sharing a part of Boom’s revenues with the local Idanha-a-Nova community. 

Since then, we have made good on our promise to support the local area while extending a hand to a number of other social, humanitarian and environmental causes around the world, donating 1% of our earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) to external organisations aligned with our own organisation's core values.

In 2025, we supported two humanitarian causes in a crisis zone, one eco organisation, and more: 

• Oxfam and Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) to support their humanitarian missions in Gaza.

• Ocean Alive foundation, a Portuguese NGOD dedicated to the protection and restoration of marine ecosystems.

• Idanha-a-Nova firefighters, whose vital work keeping the region safe needs to be applauded.

We also support the Castelo Branco association Associação Quatro Corações all year-round.

In 2019, on the island of São Tomé and Príncipe, the support materialised in the donation of a plastic recycling machine and the organisation of a series of educational workshops with local communities, supporting the Dmix Mission.

• Viola Beiroa Association: Preserving the regional musical heritage.

• CERAS – Wildlife Recovery Center: support for the construction of a wildlife hospital and the reintroduction of animals to their natural habitats.

• Kosmicare Association: risk reduction and psychedelic science.

• Álvaro Carvalho Foundation: Medical support for the elderly in rural Portugal.

• LAFIV: Community Association of Idanha-a-Velha.

• Seeds of the Interior: An educational project in Idanha-a-Nova.
