Eco Letter to the Boomers III

The Third Look at Our Eco Projects.

Dear Boomers,

What we are today is a continuous line of shared inspiration and profound connection. A reflection of the vibrant, interconnected web of life that sustains us all. This truth resonates deeply at Boom.

Consider the bicycle: it is the most iconic and eco-conscious means of transport, a beautiful symbol at the core of psychedelic culture. Just as a famous voyage by Albert Hofmann unlocked a universe of inner possibilities, the simple bicycle embodies our collective commitment of deep respect for the Earth.

Since Joost and Stan began their inspiring pilgrimage to Boom in 2008, a beautiful continuum of love, community, and adventure has flourished, using Boom as a joyful way to raise awareness. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all the Boomers who were part of the Boom By Bike Initiative this year.

Welcome to the third edition of the Eco Letter to the Boomers 2025 where we share more of our eco achievements.

ENERGY: INTRODUCTION OF BATTERY GENERATORS

This edition of Boom marked an exciting step in our journey: the first-ever pilot project of three Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) on site. Here’s how we did it:

  • We mapped the most efficient power layout for the festival: 14 generators supported by 3 BESS units of 330 kVA each.

  • These systems were strategically located – two at Sacred Fire and one in the camping area – based on grid access, stable energy loads, available space, and reduced sound impact.

  • This smart hybrid energy system is another meaningful milestone for our energy projects.

SPACESHIP EARTH: AT BOOM WE LEARN TOO

The Spaceship Earth is the materialisation of our educational projects rooted in our DIY Environmental Paradigm. There we share, we learn, and we spread the message of nature together!

This year, we hosted 20 talks and hands-on sessions on topics including biodiversity, water, soil, climate, our relationship with nature, designing homes for the future, and community building.

The area is a space to showcase Boomland’s eco-initiatives. It also brings together a network of eco-conscious individuals and organisations to share ideas and projects.

REUSING MATERIALS IS KEY

Do you believe in (art) rebirth? In Boom many of the structures and resources you see have lived multiple lives across past editions. By prioritising reuse, we minimise waste, reduce emissions, and honour the materials that shape our shared experience.

Extending the life cycle of materials and upcycle is one of our driving forces. The list of what we’ve achieved is long, but here’s a brief breakdown:

Did you know?

The Liminal Village structure was originally built in 2018, the year we celebrated Sacred Geometry as the Boom theme. Its design draws inspiration from the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence, giving shape to one of the festival’s most iconic cultural spaces. The shade – in soft hues of pale blue and purple – was first introduced in 2023 (as shown in the infographic above) and then fully reutilised once again in 2025.

WE MAKE SOIL

  • In the Sacred Fire food area, a pilot project was carried out, following up the long-lasting We Make Soil project: we collected organic waste from food vendors at Sacred Fire, for composting after the festival.

  • By composting the waste on-site in recycled plastic containers, the entire cycle is closed locally, eliminating the need for transport and reducing the carbon footprint of the process.

  • The bio-waste is currently undergoing the composting phase, and by the end of the process we expect to produce approximately 4 tonnes of compost.

  • This rich compost will then be returned to the Boomland soil, closing the loop: waste becomes soil.

Knowing ourselves and the origin of the products we consume is essential for a conscious diet that benefits all life — humans, animals, plants, and the planet.

At Boom, we take this seriously. That’s why we’ve partnered with Klimato, a tool that evaluates the ingredients in each dish and calculates its carbon footprint. This allows Boomers to make more conscious food choices.

5 MORE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT OUR ECO INITIATIVES

  1. A sustainability policy is applied to both the selection and participation of food vendors and Bazaar stalls: taking into account the material of the products for sale but also their origin, production, and packaging.

  2. Local/organic sourcing at food vendors: 70% of products came from local and/or organic suppliers.

  3. Climate impact of food options: Every restaurant had to display the origin of products and the ecological footprint of the menus.

  4. All of the festival’s merchandise is produced in Portugal, apart from one collection. This was designed with a Portuguese independent brand but made in India, to support a local community in the region of Rajasthan. It uses ethically produced and natural materials such as modal (bamboo fibre), muslin silk, EcoVero™, organic cotton, Bemberg (vegan silk), lotus fibre, rose fibre, and pure wool.

It also promoted a specific type of Batik block print, silkscreen, Dabu print, clamp dyeing, Ikaat and Indigo – thereby supporting the cultural legacy and craft of small communities in Asia. This collaboration between Boom and a local brand honours our connection with India, the birthplace of Goa Trance/Psytrance, our core culture.

Our official online marketplace Boom Bazaar is back with a renewed selection of Boom Festival and Being Gathering items. Discover a place where eco and alternative living intertwine with a responsible culture. The iconic item Love Has No Flag is there too.

  1. We are using hemp for new constructions at Boomland. We started the year with a brand new staff canteen built from hemp blocks. Fabricated in Portugal, hemp is an excellent material, captures carbon as it grows, and is a carbon neutral material. And our love affair with hemp is growing – with the Boomland School course in October, we started the construction of female urinals, which will become the first ever built with hemp in the festival world.

Thank you for being a Boomer.

Thank you for believing in co-creating a present rooted in love and regeneration.
